On a lighter note than my recent posts (mostly because I've turned my brightness up on this screen), let's take a gander into the world of cellphones.
Am I attached to my phone? Yes. Do I think it is a bad thing, and I'm going to hell? No. Look, I'm sorry I spend a lot of time searching on my phone for funny memes or stalking cute boys on Facebook. I am, however, a college girl with the intention to make people laugh and to always be available for my people when they need me.
My friends from home used to ask why I was always by my phone. It was for them, though. I can recall one time I decided to avoid my phone for a day. Of course, that was the one time I was needed. I get back to my phone and have several missed calls and texts from one of my best friends. What is her problem, I think. Well, her problem was that she had a breakdown and was thinking terrible and unreasonable thoughts about if she wanted to keep living. And that is why, my friends, I will almost always have my phone on me. There is nothing I would rather do than calm someone down, help relieve their pain, and talk it out with them. Obviously that isn't a common occurence (praise da lord), but I still feel the need to pay attention to my phone, just incase.
There are times where I should probably set it down and pay attention in class, or I should spend 2 hours less a night scrolling through instagram and twitter. Okay, ya got me there. But the social aspect of being able to talk to my friends and make plans via text, has changed my life. And I think it's safe to say it has changed the world.
Ehhhh, that reminds me, though, of some annoying things that have come about due to texting.
1. Break-up texts...LOLS this has happened to me once after an 11-month relationship. Yes it was high school, but no it is not okay to do this. Be a man. But I will happily digress.
2. You can never tell if someone is being sarcastic or what their tone is.
EX: "I'm happy for you."
Does the period mean you aren't happy? I get the feeling you aren't happy for me. You're mean, and I hate you.
Things can easily spiral out of control when you get teenage angst mixed with texting.
BUT HEY. Texting has created the world of emojis. Yas. The best little icons that can spice up a conversation. My personal favorite I will show you:
That, and the smiling piece of poop. Whoever created emojis was definitely looking out for all of us when adding the poopie. But back to my fave- pictured above. It somewhat looks like me; she parts her hair like I do, and I might make that motion a lot when I am giving sass. So there ya go.
Phones have changed everything. Again, I'm not sorry to use one of the most incredible inventions. I am sorry, though, when people use it as an excuse to cover up who they really are. I would never post anything that I didn't feel was appropriate or 100% me. People need to learn how to be themselves, and the internet has unfortunately bred an easy ground to be someone else. More times than not I think to myself where I would be without my phone. Probably unable to find anything in Boston (though with the help of maps I still can't), I would probably have less dinner plans, and I would probably laugh a little less.
In all, are we anti-social? Or are we all just looking for a little technologic love?
